Our Children

The is no greater asset than the children of the city of Memphis.

About 1 in 3 children in Memphis live below the poverty line. This equals over 90,000 kids facing economic hardship and barriers. Poverty disproportionately impacts Black and Hispanic youth.

While making progress, Memphis schools continue to struggle with low test scores, insufficient funding, aging facilities, and teacher shortages. Educational outcomes for children are below state/national levels.

With high poverty, many Memphis children face food insecurity and lack of access to healthy meals. Up to 85% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch programs.

Exposure to crime and violence remains a threat to youth due to Memphis's high violent crime rates. Community programs try to steer kids away from gang recruitment.

An estimated 5,000+ students in Memphis experience homelessness. Lack of affordable housing contributes to housing instability for families.

Memphis children suffer from above-average rates of asthma, obesity, teen pregnancy, infant mortality, lead poisoning, and other health issues tied to poverty.

Overall, children in Memphis, unfortunately, face a wide array of challenges. But, the community continues working to provide the resources and support necessary to overcome obstacles and help Memphis kids thrive.
